You can use SystemRescueCd for many tasks: 
The first time you use the computer, when no operating system is installed. The first task is creating partitions on the hard disk, and installing the operating system. With this CD-ROM, you can make partitions easily with the graphical partition tool GParted, and you can install Gentoo Linux. 
After a crash, or a mistake, you may have problems booting. For example, after installing Windows, your bootloader (LILO, Grub) may have been erased from the MBR. With this CD-ROM, you have all you need for reinstalling Grub or Lilo. 
For windows users that don't have Linux installed, it provides a tiny Linux System with most important system tools. For example, Windows users can backup their system partition using Partimage. They need Linux to run partimage.

Here is a short list that describes what you will find on this CD-ROM: 
A recent Linux kernel, that supports most important file systems, and the most important hardware. Supported file systems: Ext2/Ext3, Reiserfs, Reiser4, Fat16/Fat32, XFS, JFS, NTFS, ... The kernel supports NFS and Samba.

Usual tools for Linux users: tar/gzip/bzip2 for archiving files. The same tools for Windows users: zip/unzip, rar/unrar, p7zip are provided. This means that you are able to backup/restore your windows data. We have added DAR (Disk Archiver). This is a program like tar, but more powerful. 
Midnight-Commander (type "mc" on the console command line) is a free Norton Commander clone for Linux. With mc, it's easy to browse, copy, move, edit all files on your computer. If you don't know all the linux shell commands well, you can start with mc. 
You can use lynx or links. Both are lightweight web browsers. Under FrameBuffer mode, you can pass parameters to the command line of the links program. It will allow you to enable the graphical mode. It would show images, and you get a nice interface. 
Of course, editors are important when you have problems. Nano (easy editor),vim (vi improved) and qemacs (emacs clone) are provided for the text mode. 
The X.Org / Xvesa graphical environments and the WindowMaker window manager. It allows you to use graphical programs such as GParted, editors (gvim and leafpad), and Firefox-2.0 (you may need help from internet).

ISO Recorder is a tool (power toy) for Windows XP, 2003 and now Windows Vista, that allows (depending on the Windows version) to burn CD and DVD images (DVD support is only available on Windows Vista), copy disks, make images of the existing data CDs and DVDs and create ISO images from a content of a disk folder.

As its name suggests, this program lists all alternate data streams of an NTFS directory. 
Of course it shows the ADS of encrypted files, even when these files were encrypted with another copy of Windows 2000.

There is the /S switch to walk through subdirectories recursively and the /A switch to show the total of all bytes.

The /X switches allow to eXclude as much ADSs as you want. 
The /P switch allows to put all or some parameters into a configuration file.

xxcopy
A Win95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003 utility which runs in command line mode. 
Comes with a 16-bit version 
(XXCOPY16.EXE copies files using the short (8.3 format) name only.) 
Duplicates the entire system drive which can boot Win9x  
Keeps the same short name (8.3) in the destination as in the source. 
The source specifier accepts wildcards in directory names also. 
Backs up directory incrementally without the use of archive bit. 
Synchronizes directories  
Controls file attributes (keeps the source, destination attributes or none). 
Excludes directories or files from copying by wild cards. 
Handles a Cyclic Copy case much better than XCOPY. 
Qualifies files by file date/time (Before, On, or After). 
Deletes files or directories using the same powerful selection mechanism. 
Copies hidden/system files, and overwrites Read-only files. 
Flattens a directory tree into files in one directory. 
... and many, many, intimidatingly more ... (over 200 command switches) 
Copies security information for NTFS volume archiving. 
Supersedes Microsoft's ROBOCOPY. 
Works very much like XCOPY with the same command syntax.
