Damage Incorporated is a fun but little-known first-person shooter based on the Marathon 2 engine that Paranoid Productions licensed from Bungie.The brief description at MobyGames goes as follows:

"...[Damage Incorporated] incorporates a number of real-time strategy game mechanics to create an interesting hybrid game. The game takes place in modern day, and the player is cast as a sergeant in the Marine Corps. in charge of a team of thirteen Marines. The player is sent on a long sequence of covert missions fighting various rogue militia and paramilitary organizations based in assorted locations around the United States. The player takes up to four squad members on each mission, and though he is not always required to use them, the missions become significantly easier if he does. Squad members are extremely chatty and each have well defined personalities. The squad members can die during combat, resulting in the player potentially being short on men for the later missions. The game also includes a separate multi-player game where players can each have their own squad, resulting in some chaotic battles."

The game is perhaps best described as a primitive version of Rainbow Six: it has real-world weapons (e.g. the MP5, M-16, and more) with different kinds of bullets, actual locations, and interesting "what-if" scenarios. The levels are huge, each with many different kinds of enemies. What I like most about Damage Incorporated is that you can command specific Marines, each with his own personality and skills. For instance, a soldier codenamed Carnage is very strong, but mentally unstable. Choosing the right Marines for each mission is crucial to your success.

On the downside, the graphics look more like DOOM than a 1998 game. People and texture-mapped scenery get pixelated when you run close to them, and the Marines sometime get 'stuck' between walls or run into invisible barriers. But excellent sound effects make up for this letdown: you will hear your teammates talk over the helmet headphones, as well as authentic sounds of weapons and explosions. The game also has excellent multiplayer support, and Deathmatch mode over the Internet is especially well-designed.

If you enjoy "realistic" FPS like Rainbow Six that offers more than typical kill-everything-in-sight gameplay, and you are not already spoiled by 3D-accelerated graphics of 21st century games, check out Damage Incorporated. It is easy to get into, has plenty of levels and fun weapons to use, and has more than enough replayability to keep you coming back. HIghly recommended.

Air Offensive: The Art of Flying

Air Offensive: The Art of Flying is a decent 3D shooting game from Inca Gold.The official word on game plot: "...as a fresh recruit, you will join the militia forces of the Archipelago in a desperate attempt to fend off rebel forces, trying to establish a regime of terror. You must defend your island through 50 levels of varied terrain, intense dog-fighting and ground attack missions as part of you squadron."

Featuring 7 different hypothetical aircrafts, Air Offensive offers decent playability, although it comes across as only a marginally above-average game - nothing that will attract fans of Incoming or even Rebel Assault. The gameplay is decent enough: you fly the aircraft from a first-person perspective, blasting everything in sight from airborne enemies to ground terrets. Each of the 7 aircrafts in the game has its own arsenal, including air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, cannon, and a few more esoteric weapons. SVGA graphics is crisp and smooth, but the levels are far from the detailed and varied vistas of Incoming. So, all in all, Air Offensive would have seemed like a good game had we never seen the likes of Incoming. Unfortunately, we have, and so Air Offensive falls short of the high standards set by such modern classics. Recommended for a few minutes of quick play, but don't expect it to be a permanent resident on your hard drive.

Bounty Hunter

One of the most obscure and underrated cyberpunk shooters ever made, B-Hunter is a low-profile release developed by Danish-based Interactive Vision and published by UK-based Midas Interactive Entertainment.

Similar to Psygnosis' much better known G-Police, you are a futuristic bounty hunters who flies around in a hovercraft in a huge metropolis, attempting to arrest criminals and corrupt cops from on high. The mood is true to the game?s cyberpunk premise, with a lot of neon lights, techno soundtrack, and Blade Runner- style vehicles.

Although gameplay and premise are similar to G-Police, B-Hunter is actually a more non-linear game due to the fact that you are a bounty hunter, not a cop. This means that you are free to pursue whatever profit-making venues appeal to you at any time, and your enemies also include other bounty hunters who are after the same booty. Although your main goal is to collect as much money as you can, you have to be careful because if you shoot the wrong vehicles, you will be fined. If your fines exceed 50,000 units, then you are outlawed, and a bounty is placed on your head. You can either pick up small change by apprehending petty thieves labeled as "suspects," or you can go for the big fish. Regardless of your strategy, the hunt is not easy because of the rapid speed at which you and potential targets are traveling. One of the best things about B-Hunter is that, similar to G-Police, the city is alive, and you will not suffer from boring lulls while travelling to your destination. A lot of action and potential booty are always buzzing around you, keeping you on your toes and giving you opportunities to collect money, ammo, or get your ship repaired.

The gameworld is surprisingly large for its small size (less than 70MB full on the CD, and much larger than limited action zones in G-Police)?probably due to excellent graphics compression techniques. However, it is worth noting that, while adequate, the graphics are nowhere near the amazing visuals of G-Police. You have access to ten unique weapons, each with five different variations. These include ion gun, lead buster chain gun, magnetic plasma, nitro crackers, stun ray, heat-guided missile, sonic blast, TNT mine, and rocket-mounted demolition bomb. Unfortunately, you may only carry two different firearms at any one time because your hovercraft is only equipped with two slots. As in G-Police, the weapons can destroy other vehicles but have no effect on stationary structures. You carry a shield to deflect damage, as well as a radar to identify pathways, criminal suspects, power-ups, other bounty hunters, and mission targets. There are over 40 missions with diverse objectives, including dogfights, search-and-destroy, and gang fights. The action takes place in different areas throughout a huge metropolis that are connected by a complex tunnel system. Despite the radar, it is quite easy to get lost due to the narrow streets and limited visibility.

Although you can use the tunnels to go anywhere you want, the game is linear in a sense that you cannot access certain missions until you complete the early ones. If you prefer multiplayer, the game offers network support for up to eight players over a LAN or the Internet. If you like cyberpunk action games and enjoy the likes of G-Police, B-Hunter is well worth a look. Don?t be put off by primitive graphics by G-Police standards or its small physical size: B-Hunter is a wonderfully massive and atmospheric game that will keep you hooked for a while. Thumbs up!

Soldat is a fast-paced 2D shooter where you can play online or offline. Unlike most games, the AI in this game is actually quite skilled, but online play is still the tops when it comes to playing this game. The game bears the classic WASD controls I've grown to love, and operates very smoothly. There are 6 game types are available. Such as: Deathmatch, Teammatch, Pointmatch, Rambomatch, Capture The Flag and Infiltration [One Way CTF] and tons of weapons, like the Desert Eagle, AK74, Spas 12, Ruger, M79, Barret, and even a minigun, plus tons of others. There are primary weapons and secondary weapons, leaving plenty of options and combinations to try out until you find the perfect match. You can spar with the AI or test your skills online. You can also register to open more options, but registering is a luxury - not really necessary, but may enhance gameplay for some. You can also customize your character. You can do simple things like changing his name, to a bit more excessive things, like whether or not he has dog tags, or has a Mohawk.

The sound effects in this game are very good - they're crisp, clear, and every weapon has a distinct sound, from the buzzing of a chainsaw to the boom, chik-chik of a shotgun. The yells and sounds of blood of a fallen enemy splattering against the wall leaves you with a triumphant feeling, only to be interrupted by a playing coming behind you, and you suffer the same fate in an instant.

The graphics are well-detailed and the animation of characters jumping and rolling around is smooth, and overall very good, but nothing visually stunning. For such a small file size, this game's graphics sure pack a punch. Like I said, registering gives some enhancements, and the extra options for player looks and interfaces are a good example of that.

As soon as you start playing Soldat, you either like it or don't. Chances are, you'll love this game, because it's very good, as the score, as well as the other user reviews, clearly exemplify. Soldat is a fun, yet simple, gaming delicacy, and with such a file size as only 12 MB, what have you got to lose? Other than hours a day, playing this cruelly addictive game!
